The Tokyo Auto Salon showcased an array of modified Suzuki Jimnys, with two standouts adopting the personas of a Renault 5 Turbo and Lancia Delta Integrale, stealing the limelight. However, another pair of the charming 4×4 made a noteworthy appearance, paling in comparison to the sheer audacity of the standout creation on display.
Enter the NATS Shakotan J1, a unique amalgamation of two second-gen Suzuki Jimnys seamlessly fused to give birth to a twisted marvel – the Hummer Jimnypede. Specifically, the J1 utilizes the chassis from a Suzuki Escudo, with the Jimnys ingeniously stretched and welded side by side. Remarkably, the result is a cohesive and visually striking vehicle, complemented by the eye-catching yellow paint reminiscent of the Hummer H2.
Under the hood, the J1 packs a punch with a 2.5-litre V6 borrowed from the Escudo, providing a modest 160bhp. However, given the lowered stance achieved through its air suspension, speed may not be the primary focus. Off-road enthusiasts might reconsider, as this creation seems more inclined towards urban roads than rugged trails.
A brief inspection of the interior reveals minimal alterations from a standard Escudo, except for a surprising modification in the boot area. Taking inspiration from the style of “Pimp My Ride,” a robust 12-speaker setup, accompanied by a pair of amps sourced from Diecock, adds a touch of extravagance to the rear of the car. Interestingly, the creative minds behind this unconventional build belong to a team of students, specifically from Nippon Automobile College.
For those who prefer their Jimny to retain its functional 4×4 capabilities while adopting a different guise, alternative options are available. Examples include the Damd version, which channels the aesthetics of the classic Land Rover Defender, or Liberty Walk’s transformation, giving the Jimny the appearance of a miniature Mercedes G-Class.
