Subaru Crosstrek launched: the XV’s heavily reworked successor

Meet the revamped Subaru Crosstrek, a stylish update to the familiar XV. Since its introduction to the UK market in 2017, the XV has faced growing competition from newer models like the Ford Puma and Renault Austral. Subaru has responded by giving the SUV a comprehensive facelift, incorporating fresh technology, and rebranding it as the Crosstrek.

The Crosstrek boasts a significant visual overhaul, featuring new front and rear bumpers, slimmer LED headlights, and additional body cladding that extends along the car’s sides. Even the entry-level model comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the top-tier Touring version flaunts 18-inch alloys. Aerodynamic enhancements, such as new air outlets on the front wheel arches and rear bumper, contribute to reduced lift and improved stability.

Inside, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek retains a familiar dashboard and trims for XV owners, with targeted upgrades to enhance overall comfort. Notable improvements include added sound deadening and a redesigned front seat for enhanced long-distance driving. The highlight of the interior is a new 11.6-inch portrait infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Under the hood, the Crosstrek inherits Subaru’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid boxer engine. Although less powerful than its predecessor, producing 134bhp and 134lb ft of torque, the Crosstrek maintains its off-road capabilities. The engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and the Touring model allows drivers to cycle through eight fixed gear ratios using paddles behind the steering wheel.

Subaru emphasizes its rugged image with features like hill descent control and X-Mode, an off-road driving setting adjusting throttle response, gearing, and stability control for rough terrains. Additional driving modes, including Intelligent and Sport, are exclusive to the Touring model.

Safety is a priority, with every Crosstrek equipped with the latest Eyesight Driver Assistance Technology, boasting improved pedestrian and bicycle recognition and faster hazard notifications. Standard safety features include automatic emergency steering, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and an interior monitoring system to warn drivers of distractions or fatigue.

The Crosstrek is available for order in the UK, with prices starting at £34,290 for the Limited specification. While slightly pricier than competitors like the Skoda Karoq, Subaru justifies the cost with additional equipment and a standard hybrid powertrain.
