2024 GMC Canyon Review: Ready for the trail, happy on the commute

The 2024 GMC Canyon stands out in the midsize pickup segment with stellar exterior styling across all trims. It offers a punchy powertrain with a potent 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

The AT4X off-road trims, particularly the AT4X AEV Edition, provide outstanding off-road capabilities with Multimatic dampers and additional off-road goodies.

The Canyon’s interior boasts tech and amenities, featuring an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The cabin combines screens with hard buttons/knobs for essential controls, and unique designs differentiate trims like the Denali and AT4X. The midsize pickup falls into the larger side of its segment, offering a crew cab with a short bed.

While the Canyon impresses with its power and off-road prowess, it comes with a high price tag. However, the cost is justified by its tech and capability. The model competes well within its segment, outperforming rivals like the Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier.

For 2024, the GMC Canyon introduces the AT4X AEV Edition for enhanced off-road performance. The 11-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard across all trims.

The vehicle’s fuel economy stands at 19 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive, dropping slightly for non-AT4X four-wheel-drive variants and further for the AT4X.

The driving experience varies across trims, with the AT4X offering a more comfortable and capable ride, thanks to its Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers and off-road-focused features. Towing capacity reaches 7,700 pounds for most trims, except the AT4X, which is rated at 6,000 pounds.

The Canyon’s pricing starts at $37,595 for the base Elevation trim, with additional costs for a four-wheel drive. Trims like the AT4 and Denali offer extra features and luxury, with the AT4X being the top-tier model starting at $55,895.

Safety features include standard driver assistance features like forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist. Optional safety packages include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera. Crash test ratings for the 2024 Canyon were not available at the time of writing.
