Today, Isuzu is commonly recognized as a manufacturer specializing in trucks and buses. For those with a certain level of familiarity, the whimsical fictional character “Joe Isuzu” may come to mind, humorously embellishing facts to promote models like the Trooper.

However, Isuzu, whose name translates to “fifty bells,” boasts a history spanning over a century, with some of its lesser-known passenger cars being true treasures.

A prime example is the 1973 Isuzu Bellett, which is currently up for auction on Bring A Trailer—a platform affiliated with Hearst Autos, similar to Car and Driver.

The vintage vehicle features period-appropriate modifications and presents a unique blend reminiscent of a Datsun 510 and a Mazda Cosmo, making it a one-of-a-kind acquisition if you secure the winning bid.

Before the Bellett, Isuzu’s production included the Hillman Imp, manufactured under license from the UK’s Rootes Group.

While the Imp, a compact rear-engine vehicle, shared similarities with contemporary Volkswagens, the Bellett was notably advanced upon its 1963 debut. It featured fully independent suspension rear-wheel drive, and the GT variant boasted front disc brakes.

The showcased GT model from a later year is equipped with a 1800cc single-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine, originally rated at 113 horsepower. Though slightly less powerful than a contemporaneous

BMW 2002tii, the Bellett’s 200-pound lighter frame, coupled with enhancements such as twin Mikuni side draft carburetors and a performance exhaust, likely provided an energetic driving experience.

The suspension has been lowered, complemented by the tasteful choice of RS Watanabe performance alloys, Japan’s equivalent of the classic Minilite wheels.

Stepping inside, the car exudes a businesslike charm with a three-spoke steering wheel, a wooden shift knob for the four-speed transmission, and checkered floor mats completing the vintage aesthetic.

Recent maintenance work includes rebuilding the rear brake cylinders and replacing the water pump, battery, and spark plugs. The car’s true mileage is unknown, and it comes with a New Hampshire title.

Rolling this Isuzu to a local car meet is sure to attract attention, with enthusiasts likely bombarding you with questions throughout the morning. The only potential rival in terms of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) coolness might be a Toyota 2000GT, but those now command a million-dollar price tag.

Whether you were previously unaware of this intriguing Isuzu model or not, here’s your opportunity to claim the spotlight with a unique Bellett. Act fast—the auction concludes on January 31.
