Malukas, at 22 years old, is embarking on his third season in the IndyCar Series, but it marks his debut with Arrow McLaren after securing his spot in the team’s 2024 lineup during last year’s season finale at Laguna Seca.
According to a representative from the team, Malukas sustained an injury while cycling in the western region. While a fracture has been confirmed, the current plan is for him to undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon.
At present, it remains uncertain whether the Chicago-born Lithuanian American will miss any races at the beginning of the season. “From there, we’ll have a better understanding of the recovery timeline,” said the team representative in an email on Monday night.
Arrow McLaren signed Malukas to drive their No. 6 Chevrolet following the contractual turmoil surrounding reigning and two-time IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou. Despite previously agreeing to join McLaren, Palou chose to stay with Chip Ganassi Racing.
Malukas has spent the last two years driving for Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports, notching two podium finishes (both in St. Louis), including one runner-up, across 34 starts.
