If the Lincoln Mark X concept didn’t capture your attention, perhaps you’ll be captivated by the Ford Thunderbird Italien. Scheduled for auction by RM Sotheby’s early next month, this show car began its life as a 1962 Thunderbird convertible.
However, it transformed an Italian-inspired coupe by Dearborn Steel Tubing, under Ford’s direction.
During the makeover, the car received a sleek fiberglass roof and a “Ferrari-inspired egg-crate grille that partly concealed the turn signals.” But that’s just the beginning, as it also acquired front fenders and doors from a 1963 Thunderbird.
Additionally, modified rear fenders and around 80 custom trim pieces were added, including distinctive side vents and chrome-plated embellishments on the hood.
Inside, nearly every surface is adorned with leather or metal, accentuated by black details and meticulous craftsmanship. Originally designed to showcase Ford’s attention to the burgeoning ‘kustom kulture’ scene, the car participated in events like the Custom Car Caravan and the Cavalcade of Custom Cars at the 1964–1965 World’s Fair.
It was also prominently featured in magazines, such as the June 1963 issue of Speed and Custom. After its time in the limelight, the Thunderbird was slated for destruction but was fortunately spared. It was returned to Dearborn Steel Tubing and eventually sold to actor Dale Robertson before changing hands several times over the years.
In 2005, Tom Maruska purchased and meticulously restored the Italien to its original glory. Sold again in 2008, it has since been recently “freshened up” by its current owner.
If you’re interested in joining the prestigious list of owners, be prepared to shell out an estimated $400,000 – $600,000 (£317,420 – £476,130 / €371,140 – €556,710).
