Rumors about the next-generation Toyota MR2 have been circulating for quite some time, with a recent report from Japan suggesting that the sports car could debut by the end of 2025 and hit the market the following year with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.
Over the years, there have been various rumors about Toyota’s plans for the next MR2, including considerations for a pure electric model, a Corolla GR-powered ICE version, and the possibility of offering both alongside a hybrid variant.
Adding to the complexity, Toyota unveiled an electric car concept called the FT-Se, which closely resembled a future MR2. However, reports suggest that Toyota is considering two separate sports cars an electric model based on the FT-Se for 2027, and a combustion-powered MR2 set for release in 2026.
The automotive industry is facing constant changes, from regulatory shifts to evolving customer preferences, leading to a dynamic landscape. Despite the uncertainty, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing sub-brand has injected new life into the company, as seen with the successful relaunch of the Supra.
According to the latest report, the gas-powered MR2 will retain its predecessor’s mid-engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, featuring a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine similar to the GR Corolla and GR Yaris, producing 300 hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque.
Toyota has explored various designs for the new MR2, initially considering a mid-engined hatchback before settling on a low-slung, two-door sports car reminiscent of its predecessors.
The report indicates that Toyota is still undecided on the roof and rear decklid design, considering options that echo the original MR2’s profile or resemble the current Supra’s shape.
Regardless of the styling, the car is expected to measure approximately 4,400 mm (173 inches) in length, 1,850 mm (72.8 inches) in width, and 1,230 mm (48.4 inches) in height, with a 2,600 mm (102.3-inch) wheelbase.
It’s anticipated to weigh around 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs) and will be available with both a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
