Originating from a manufacturer established in 1954, the company known today as KG Mobility Corporation had a previous identity as the SsangYong Motor Company from 1988 to 2023. The company’s history is complex: two separate entities merged to form Ha Dong-hwan Motor Co., which later became Dong-A Motor in 1977.

In 1986, it was acquired by the SsangYong Group, undergoing subsequent ownership changes with Daewoo Motors (now GM Korea), SAIC of China, and Mahindra & Mahindra. Facing financial challenges, the company saw a change in ownership in 2022, with the KG Group becoming the majority stakeholder through a special consortium.

To break away from its troubled past, the company rebranded as KG Mobility in March 2023, with international markets recognizing it as KGM.

This rebranding was accompanied by the launch of the all-new Torres model in the UK, previously announced under the SsangYong branding and showcased as the Torres EVX rugged electric SUV at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show.

Available for ordering, the all-new Torres marks the company’s shift towards a ‘Powered by Toughness’ design philosophy while retaining its distinct SUV characteristics.

Named after the scenic Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, the mid-size crossover SUV shares its platform with the fourth-generation SsangYong Korando and will soon be available in UK showrooms in ICE-powered models.

Additionally, the Torres EVX will be available starting in April. The regular Torres lineup includes 2WD K30 and K40 grades, with a K40 AWD variant set to debut in the summer.

All models feature a 1.5-liter G-Di turbocharged engine paired with a 3rd generation Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, offering 10% more power than the Korando at 163 ps/161 hp and a maximum torque rating of 280 Nm (207 lb-ft).

Inside, the Torres boasts a modern layout with dual 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and a central infotainment touchscreen. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, and front USB & AUX ports.

The spacious cargo area offers a luggage capacity ranging from 703 to 1,662 liters (24.82 to 58.69 cu.ft.), along with a towing capacity of 750 kg (1,653 pounds) for an unbraked trailer.
