The Fisker Ocean presents a compelling option for those seeking a long-range crossover with electric power, eschewing traditional combustion engines or hybrid setups.
However, recent reports have surfaced regarding potential issues with unintended vehicle movement, prompting investigations by the federal Office of Defects Investigation. Four incidents have been reported, one resulting in injury.
Owners have detailed instances where shifting from Drive to Park resulted in the vehicle transitioning to Neutral instead. One owner, in complaint number 11560184, reported experiencing this issue multiple times, with one incident leading to injury when they were struck by the vehicle’s door.
The other three complaints (11560754, 11568937, and 11569568) did not result in injuries, though the risk of property damage or further accidents remains a concern. While the steering column-mounted gear selector design appears sound, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking these complaints seriously.
Pending the outcome of preliminary evaluation PE24-005, which may result in a safety recall, Fisker could be tasked with rectifying potential issues in approximately 4,000 vehicles sold in the US market. Concurrently, the agency will assess the extent and severity of the reported problems to address any safety-related concerns.
Measuring 188 inches in length, the Ocean slightly surpasses the leading Model Y in size. Tesla’s Model Y holds the title of the world’s best-selling production vehicle, with JATO Dynamics reporting approximately 1.23 million units delivered in 2023, outpacing the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla.
Production of the Model Y occurs in Fremont, California, while Fisker has enlisted Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, to manufacture the Ocean.
Vehicles produced in Austria can be identified by 17-character VINs starting with VA, VB, VC, or VE, while Tesla vehicles from Fremont feature VINs located on the right side upper door pillar, accessible after removing the B pillar’s interior trim.
At present, the EPA lists the Ocean Extreme with a range of 360 miles (579 kilometers), surpassing the Long Range Model Y’s 310 miles (499 kilometers). Pricing for the Ocean’s top-tier trim begins at $61,499, compared to Tesla’s $47,990 for the Model Y Long Range.
The Rivian R1S Dual-Motor Max Pack claims the title of the longest-range sport utility vehicle available, boasting a range of 400 miles (644 kilometers), outstripping its competitors.
