To combat the alarming trend of teenagers exploiting vulnerabilities in Hyundai and Kia vehicles through a simple hack showcased on TikTok, the Port St. Lucie Police Department has initiated a program to distribute steering wheel locks as a preventive measure.
The viral TikTok trend exposed certain model years of Hyundai and Kia vehicles susceptible to intrusion, allowing thieves to start the engines with a mere USB cable due to the absence of immobilizers.
Dubbed the “Kia Boys” trend, this phenomenon has led to an increase in car theft incidents across the United States, prompting Hyundai and Kia owners to resort to steering wheel locks for protection.
While the efficacy of these locks is debatable, they serve as a deterrent, causing thieves to reconsider their attempts or incur additional expenses from broken windows.
In collaboration with Hyundai and Kia, law enforcement agencies in various regions, including Port St. Lucie, are distributing steering wheel locks to eligible owners.
Criteria for eligibility include owning a vulnerable model, residency in Port St. Lucie, and possessing a Florida driver’s license or ID card, with appointments available for lock installation.
Hyundai and Kia recommend installing an anti-theft software update for eligible models to prevent engine start-up and deter thieves. Despite these efforts, instances of car theft related to the “Kia Boys” trend persist, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and proactive security measures.
