Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State took part in a test run of the Red Line Rail project ahead of its official launch on February 29th, 2024. The Red Line Rail is a 37-kilometer mass transit system stretching from Agbado to Oyingbo.
Sanwo-Olu’s participation in the test run was a demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Lagos.
Accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, the General Manager of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Governor Sanwo-Olu boarded the train at Ikeja Train Station for the test run.
The test run covered the route from Ikeja to Iju and back, providing an opportunity for officials to assess the readiness and functionality of the new trains.
During the test run, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the project’s impact, stating that trains would soon operate between Agbado and Oyingbo stations with a frequency of 10-15 minutes.
This increased frequency is expected to enhance accessibility and convenience for commuters along the Red Line Rail route, facilitating smoother and more efficient travel across the city.

With its inauguration scheduled for February 29th, 2024, by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the project marks a major step forward in the development of Lagos’ transportation infrastructure.
It is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a more sustainable mode of transportation for millions of Lagosians.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s active involvement in the test run and the forthcoming launch underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing public transportation initiatives that benefit the people of Lagos.
