After much anticipation fueled by teasers, spy photos, and leaks, Renault has finally unveiled the production version of the Renault 5 E-Tech, a model previously previewed by a concept.
The original Renault 5, affectionately known as ‘Le Car,’ was a beloved hatchback produced from 1972 to 1996, capturing hearts across continents. Now, nearly three decades later, the nameplate returns as an electric vehicle, embodying a chic EV lifestyle.
Announced in early 2021 as part of the ‘Renaulution’ strategy, the Renault 5 E-Tech was previewed by prototypes, including the Alpine A290_Beta, which will serve as the spiritual successor to the Renault 5 Alpine. Built on the CMF–B EV / AmpR Small platform, this model aims to provide an electric alternative in the supermini segment, akin to the electric MINI Cooper E.
Debuting at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, the Renault 5 E-Tech is aimed to be competitively priced at around €25k (approximately $27k). It features a long wheelbase, optimized interior space, and trunk capacity, alongside advanced EV technologies such as a bidirectional charger compatible with V2L and V2G setups and Level 2 automated driving.
Renault envisions three powertrain options for the Renault 5 E-Tech, with a battery capacity of up to 52 kWh delivering a maximum range of 400 km/249 miles (WLTP). Production is slated to commence in the summer of 2025 at the Douai Gigafactory in France, pending successful developments.
Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand, describes the Renault 5 E-Tech as a design masterstroke, blending cutting-edge technologies with the iconic Renault 5 DNA.
