Wayfarer Vans, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has rolled out its initial camper van conversion of the 2024 Ford Transit Trail from its factory. The crisp and modern interior of Wayfarer confidently adorns the Transit Trail, creating an uncluttered indoor sanctuary that seamlessly complements the van’s rugged off-road-oriented exterior design.

The sophisticated materials and expert installation work conceal the affordability of this impressive camper van, addressing one of the main obstacles to owning one — cost.

Opting for a new 2024 Ford Transit Trail high-roof (starting at approximately $72,000) equipped with Wayfarer Vans’ Wilford interior conversion (beginning at $24,000, this model priced around $28,000) results in a top-notch camper van for roughly $100,000.

This offers a fantastic opportunity to invest in a new van while allocating the remaining budget towards a straightforward, adaptable interior setup.

Customization

Another challenge in camper van ownership is navigating the complexity of customization options. With countless ways to configure a camper van, where does one even begin? The process can be overwhelming and daunting, to say the least.

Wayfarer simplifies this process by focusing on converting specific models of new and used (2014-and-newer) Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster vans. (No Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, though.)

Wayfarer has designated its 136-inch wheelbase high-roof Ram ProMaster camper van conversion as Walter; The longer 159-inch wheelbase ProMaster is Walt.

The 148-inch wheelbase Ford Transit builds are known as Wilma (mid-roof) and Wilford (high-roof). Walter, Walt, Wilma, and Wilford — doesn’t that sound fun? — conversions are priced between $21,200 and $24,500.

In a Wayfarer conversion, the entire transformation is inclusive, turning an empty, chilly, cavernous cargo van interior into a charming retreat. The foundation of the Wilford conversion encompasses flooring, cargo tracks, 100-percent wool insulation, and soft, contoured removable panels throughout.

Constructed of a laminated composite material that can be routed, cut, or drilled into, the walls, ceiling, trim, and cabinet doors complete the conversion.

Furniture and Interior

The furniture, crafted from UV-treated water and scratch-resistant nine-ply solid-core Baltic Birch, comprises a kitchen galley (featuring a sink and fold-down leaf), two high-back boot boxes, a Lagun swivel table, and upper cabinets (positioned on both sides of the bed and above the galley).

Wayfarer utilizes a stain- and water-resistant washable fabric for upholstery, but they also accommodate custom cushions made from materials provided by customers. At the rear, the spacious sleeping area boasts a five-inch-thick memory foam mattress resting on a grooved bed platform.

The basics are completed with integrated LED puck lights in the ceiling, an insulated cab partition, and magnetic rear window covering. Hand pump control manages the flow of water from the five-gallon fresh and gray water tanks. There is no built-in bathroom or shower.

Add-ons available to customers include a single rear seat (with the potential for a collapsible two-person bench seat in the future), vent fan, vented window, Propex heater, Goal Zero Yeti 1500x, wheel well storage box, lower bunk platform, Dometic fridge, custom cushions, and more.

Modular and flexible, Wayfarer interiors remove a third barrier to camper ownership — the need to justify and commit to a permanent layout. While you’ll choose a preset layout for installation day, what happens afterward is entirely up to you.

Using a 9/16-inch socket wrench, furniture can be easily reconfigured or removed, whether you’re experimenting with a new layout or requiring extra space for hauling.

Because all the interior pieces are pre-cut and assembled in advance, and Wayfarer adheres to its set plan for conversions, buildouts can be completed in as little as one day. This eliminates yet another barrier to camper van ownership — lengthy waitlists and build times that leave your asset in someone else’s hands for longer than desired.

The Installation Process

Upon acquiring the van, which Wayfarer can assist in sourcing through its dealership partners, the company schedules installation appointments anywhere from two to nine weeks in advance.

While securing a Transit Trail may pose the greatest challenge in the process, Wayfarer notes that these off-road vans are increasingly available at dealerships and in its conversion shop.

All conversions take place at Wayfarer’s facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Recognizing the difficulty of transporting your van to the Rocky Mountain state, Wayfarer contributes up to $2,000 to assist in shipping the van from your residence to the shop.

The cost of delivery/return shipping can then be included in your loan. If you’re driving your new van home on a road trip, they’ll arrange to pick you up from the airport.

Wayfarer Vans’ affordable and modular Ford Transit Trail Wilford conversion offers a direct and efficient means of stepping into the world of camper van ownership. We eagerly anticipate seeing these conversions out in the wild, adding to the over 1,000 vans Wayfarer has put on the road since 2015.
