Renault And Volkswagen In Talks To Co-Develop A Cheap EV

Renault and Volkswagen are currently engaged in promising discussions regarding the joint development of an affordable small electric vehicle (EV), potentially countering the looming threat of Chinese competitors offering cheaper alternatives to European models.

The European automotive landscape, particularly in markets where Renault and Volkswagen hold significant sales, faces the dual challenge of decreasing EV demand and the emergence of competitively priced Chinese vehicles.

At the Geneva auto show, Renault CEO Luca de Meo disclosed ongoing negotiations with Volkswagen and undisclosed potential partners. “I am open to anybody who wants to jump in. I have production capacity. I have the platform. I know how to do it,” stated de Meo.

Renault’s upcoming entry into this segment is the Twingo EV, slated for release no earlier than 2026 with a targeted price below €20,000. Discussions with Volkswagen specifically revolve around utilizing Twingo’s platform, a modified version of the AmpR Small architecture featured in the newly introduced Renault 5 E-Tech electric model.

De Meo has previously hinted at the possibility of employing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the Twingo to lower production costs. Regardless of the outcome of partnership talks, Renault remains committed to the Twingo project. “I don’t have any time to waste, so I will not postpone it,” emphasized de Meo.

Volkswagen’s brand CEO, Thomas Schaefer, has expressed openness to collaborations aimed at reducing EV prices below the €20,000 mark. While a potential agreement between Volkswagen and Renault holds promise, these discussions are in early stages, leaving room for developments in the future.
