Chinese automaker BYD is setting its sights ambitiously on the Indian automotive market, known for its pivotal role in driving innovation and development within the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

Recently, at the esteemed 2024 Geneva Motor Show, BYD revealed its latest offering, the Seal U SUV, signaling its commitment to cutting-edge automotive technology.

While the Seal U SUV will hit global markets in both electric and plug-in hybrid variants, its availability in India is likely to be limited to the electric version alone. Notably, the Seal U SUV shares its platform with the upcoming Seal sedan, slated for launch on March 5.

In line with contemporary safety standards and technological advancements, the BYD Seal U SUV boasts a coveted five-star Euro NCAP rating and showcases a state-of-the-art 8-in-1 electric powertrain system designed for mass production.

Offering versatility, the SUV comes with two battery options: a 71kWh or an 87kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, providing claimed ranges of 520km and 605km, respectively.

Rapid charging capability is a highlight, with the Seal U featuring a 140 kW DC system capable of charging from 30% to 80% in a mere 28 minutes. Furthermore, buyers can select from two motor configurations, delivering power outputs of 207hp and 221hp.

For those inclined towards hybrid options, BYD offers a plug-in hybrid variant equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine generating 107 hp, complemented by a 197hp electric motor coupled with a CVT transmission. An 18.3 kWh battery provides an electric-only range of 110 km, with rapid charging from 30% to 80% achievable in just 35 minutes.

The Seal U SUV comes loaded with an array of premium features, including a sliding panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, a head-up display, seamless connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a sophisticated 4G connection system, Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, NFC-enabled keyless entry via card or iPhone, and standard Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology.

In the Indian market, BYD is gearing up to introduce the Seal electric sedan, anticipated to be priced around the 50-lakh mark, positioning it squarely against competitors such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Enthusiasts can expect further revelations on March 5, promising an exciting future for electric mobility in India.
