In the realm of automotive fascination, it’s not the routine engine swaps that captivate enthusiasts but rather the unconventional pairings of chassis and drivetrains. Enter Paul Foster’s extraordinary project unveiled on Instagram: a 1982 BMW E21 3-Series that underwent a remarkable transformation.
Over a decade, Paul meticulously sculpted the E21 into a vision reminiscent of a 1980s German touring car or even a Group 5 World Championship racer. While the original E21 might have left the factory with either a four-cylinder or six-cylinder engine, Paul diverged from convention by installing a 5.4-liter Rover V8 under the hood.
This engine, a stalwart of various British vehicles, received additional enhancements, including Suzuki GSX-R1000 K2 throttle bodies and custom equal-length headers, resulting in a distinctive exhaust note.
Complementing the potent V8 is a Cosworth T5 WC five-speed manual transmission, tailored for high-performance applications. With GAZ coilover suspension, drilled and slotted brake rotors, and a host of aggressive aero additions, Paul’s creation stands as a testament to automotive ingenuity.
Named the “Swansong,” this unique restomod boasts a meticulously crafted tan leather interior, Dakota Digital gauges, and an Art of Sound custom audio system. With its upcoming auction at Mecum in Glendale, Arizona, the Swansong aims to command top bids, potentially reaching $325,000.
