Alpine announces F1 technical restructuring after key exits

During the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, news surfaced regarding the resignations of technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer, although Harman was still seen on the pit wall at Sakhir.

Subsequently, the team announced the implementation of a new three-pillared organizational structure reminiscent of McLaren’s current setup.

Under this arrangement, Joe Burnell assumes the role of technical director (engineering), David Wheater transitions into technical director (aerodynamics), and Ciaron Pilbeam takes on the position of technical director (performance). All three will report directly to team principal Bruno Famin.

Meanwhile, Eric Meignan leads the Viry engine team as technical director (power unit), focusing on the 2026 project.

John Woods, the newly appointed Enstone COO and former Lotus road cars executive, has commenced his duties on the team. Audrey Vastroux, a Renault veteran, serves as his counterpart at Viry.

Wheater, who previously served at Enstone during its Renault/Lotus era from 2000 to 2013, recently rejoined the team following a nine-year tenure at Williams.

Alpine attributes these changes to the challenging start of the season, highlighted by Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly qualifying 19th and 20th in Bahrain, respectively, and finishing the race in 17th and 18th positions, ahead only of delayed cars.

In essence, the departures of Harman and de Beer presented a timely opportunity for reassessment.

“We have opted for these organizational adjustments as it’s evident that we are falling short of our desired performance level,” stated Famin. “It’s time to recalibrate our structure and personnel.

“The new three-pillared framework, with specialized technical directors overseeing distinct areas, aims to foster better collaboration and enhance performance from our factories to the race track.

“I have full confidence in Joe, David, and Ciaron to collaborate effectively in driving the team towards the necessary performance and advancements.

“Lastly, I extend my gratitude to Matt and Dirk for their contributions over the past few years and wish them success in their future endeavors.”
