The seamless coexistence of the Porsche Taycan and Porsche Panamera stems from their distinct powertrains, with one being electric and the other conventional. However, the question arises: what happens if the Panamera transitions to electric? Porsche believes there’s no cause for concern.
Inevitably, the time will come for the Porsche Panamera to undergo an electric makeover, paving the way for its successor. But can an electric Panamera coexist alongside the Taycan? Absolutely.
Kevin Giek, spearheading the Taycan project, suggests in a recent interview that an electric Panamera could indeed complement the Taycan. Giek dismisses fears of cannibalization within Porsche’s lineup, emphasizing the differing market niches of the two models.
He asserts, “We think the Panamera segment is more about space and luxury, completely different from the Taycan, which is more about sportiness. They both have their position in the market; both make sense, and we are sure there are customers for them.”
While the prospect of an electric Panamera is on the horizon, it’s not imminent. With a brand-new Porsche Panamera already on the market, the transition will likely take time.
When it does materialize, it’s expected to become Porsche’s flagship electric vehicle, leveraging a platform distinct from the current Volkswagen Group offerings.
Porsche’s plans also include an electric Cayenne in development, utilizing Volkswagen’s new modular SSP platform. Thus, it’s plausible that an electric Panamera could be based on a derivative of this platform.
