Rivian Unveils Smaller R3 and R3X Models Alongside R2 SUV

Rivian today revealed not only the highly anticipated R2 SUV but also took the wraps off the compact R3 and sporty R3X variants. Expected to join the company’s lineup in the coming years, likely as 2027 models, these smaller models share the same platform as the R2 but with a shorter wheelbase.

The Rivian R3 features the company’s signature design elements, with its smooth body panels and wheels pushed out to the corners. It boasts a power-operated rear hatch with a unique full-width taillight and a separate section for the rear glass, ideal for transporting longer items like surfboards.

Based on the R2 platform, the R3 is expected to offer similar drivetrain configurations and battery options, with an estimated range of over 300 miles and fast charging capabilities. Customers can choose between single or dual electric motors for rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, while the rugged R3X variant offers a three-motor setup.

Sporting a tri-motor powertrain, wider wheels, and higher ground clearance, the R3X presents a more adventurous stance. Its teal paint scheme with orange accents and aggressive tire tread give it a distinctive appearance, reminiscent of 80s rally cars.

Inside, both models feature ribbed seats and a spacious cabin, complemented by a large glass roof. The R3X, like its counterpart, offers flat-folding front and rear seats, ideal for creating additional sleeping space.

While pricing details for the 2027 Rivian R3 and R3X are yet to be disclosed, they are expected to be more affordable than the larger R2 model. Anticipated starting prices range between $35,000 to $40,000 for the R3 and $45,000 to $55,000 for the R3X.
