BMW enthusiasts, rejoice! While an electric BMW M3 is on the horizon, petrolheads can also anticipate another generation of the iconic BMW M3 with a petrol-powered engine. However, the future of a similar BMW M4 remains uncertain.

According to sources cited by BMW Blog, BMW is planning to introduce a new petrol-powered M3, codenamed G84, around 2027 or 2028. This aligns with the production schedule of the current G80 M3, which is slated to continue until the second quarter of 2027.

The upcoming petrol-powered M3 will be based on the eighth-generation 3 Series, codenamed G50, set to debut in late 2026. Both the G50 3 Series and G84 M3 will utilize an updated version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform, which serves as the foundation for all current rear- and all-wheel-drive BMW models.

While details are not confirmed, it is speculated that the new M3 will feature an updated version of the S58 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine, delivering 390kW of power and 650Nm of torque, similar to the latest M4 Competition.

The fate of an accompanying S58-powered M4 remains uncertain, and there is no mention of a successor to the current M3 wagon in the report. The petrol-powered G84 M3 is expected to coexist with an electric M3, codenamed ZA01. Before these models hit the market, a facelift for the current M3 is set to be unveiled later this year.

The refreshed M3, along with the updated 3 Series and M4, will feature revised exterior styling, including adjustments to the headlights and tail lights. Additionally, expect enhancements in power for the Competition variant and updates to the interior, including the latest operating system for the infotainment setup.
