How Red Bull’s unique F1 cooling approach helped boost its top speed in Jeddah

Although the RB20 trailed behind the super slippery Haas in the official speed trap during qualifying, it showcased an impressive balance between straight-line speed and cornering ability.

In Saudi Arabia, Red Bull demonstrated its ability to enhance the RB20’s performance through strategic adjustments to its bodywork. By experimenting with various parts to reduce cooling output, the team aimed to minimize drag and maximize top speed.

The RB20 boasts a cleverly designed aerodynamic package, featuring conventional airbox arrangements, slender vertical and horizontal sidepod inlets, and snorkel-like intakes beside the rear legs of the halo.

The car offers diverse heat rejection options, including louvred panels on each side of the engine cover, which can be closed for improved aerodynamic efficiency.

Moreover, the car’s rear wing underwent modifications to decrease downforce and drag while maintaining optimal performance. The spoon-shaped mainplane’s central section was raised to reduce the taper towards the endplate, resulting in a more loosely wound corner section.

Trimming of the upper flap and tip sections, along with adjustments to the V-shaped notch and Gurney flap, contributed to enhancing the car’s balance and top speed when utilizing DRS.

Furthermore, Red Bull introduced a new beam wing configuration aimed at reducing load generation.

Both elements saw a reduction in chord across their span, particularly the upper element, which was noticeably shorter than the specification used in Bahrain. These alterations, coupled with refinements to the rear wing, aimed to optimize the RB20’s performance on the track.
