Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has sparked speculation with a recent trademark filing for the name “R1X” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Although the filing dates back to 2021, it was only published by the USPTO in October 2023, hinting at potential new developments for Rivian’s existing R1 platform, which underpins the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV.
The use of the “X” suffix in the nomenclature suggests that the R1X could be a performance-oriented version of either the R1T or R1S, akin to the R3X’s positioning as a sportier variant of the R3.
The introduction of X variants for the R1 lineup could serve to sustain consumer interest in these models as they mature while also positioning Rivian to compete more directly with premium off-road vehicles like the Ford F-150 Raptor and GMC Hummer EV.
A recent patent filing showcased a pickup truck with rugged, Raptor-inspired styling, hinting at the possibility of Rivian exploring such design elements to enhance the R1T’s appeal over time.
A performance-focused R1X variant would likely need to surpass the current quad-motor powertrains’ output, which stands at 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque, enabling the R1T to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.0 seconds, according to Rivian’s estimates.
While Rivian may retain the quad-motor configuration, speculation suggests that it might opt for its proprietary Enduro drive units, currently utilized in dual-motor models, to power the R1X. However, Rivian’s immediate focus remains on bringing the newly unveiled R2 electric SUV and R3/R3X hot hatches into production.
The R2 is scheduled to roll off the assembly line at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant, alongside the R1T and R1S, starting in 2026. Details regarding the production location and timeline for the R3 are yet to be disclosed by the company.
