In a recent test conducted by Edmunds, four affordable performance cars were put through their paces both in acceleration and on an autocross course.
Among them, the Honda Civic Si emerged as the most budget-friendly option, priced at $29,100 before destination charges. However, its performance was hindered by the use of all-season tires, resulting in slower acceleration and handling compared to its counterparts.
The Civic Si, driven by vehicle testing director Jonathan Elfalan, clocked 7.7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour and completed the autocross course in 49.37 seconds.
Despite its slower acceleration, the Hyundai Elantra N showcased impressive agility on the autocross, outperforming the Subaru BRZ tS and Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club.
Although the rear-wheel-drive BRZ tS offers a more exhilarating driving experience, both Clint Simone and Brian Wong praised the front-wheel-drive Elantra N for its engaging and fun-to-drive nature. Hyundai’s competitive pricing further sweetens the deal, offering more value compared to its Japanese counterparts.
The Elantra N comes well-equipped with standard features such as black leather and microsuede upholstery, 19-inch wheels, a variable exhaust valve system, an N Corner Carving Differential, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system.
Despite minor drawbacks like the optional N dual-clutch transmission, which sacrifices fuel efficiency for quicker shifts, the Elantra N remains a compelling option in the affordable performance car segment.
