MG Australia has opted to forgo a facelift for the current HS in favor of introducing a newer, more dynamically styled model from another brand under the SAIC Motor umbrella. This decision aligns with MG’s plan to unveil a new iteration of its mid-sized SUV later this year.

The forthcoming next-generation MG HS is scheduled to make its debut in the second half of this year, initially debuting with petrol-powered variants. While a replacement for the current HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid is still on the horizon, it is anticipated to follow the petrol model’s release.

Last year, patent images surfaced on the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) database, indicating that the replacement for the HS is in development.

Contrary to initial speculation, these images appear to depict the redesigned HS rather than a successor to the Marvel R. Notably, the revised design draws inspiration from the RX5, a model from Roewe, another marque within the SAIC Motor portfolio.

The third-generation RX5, launched in 2022, is available with both petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Its dimensions, measuring 4655mm in length, 1890mm in width, and 1664mm in height, with a 2765mm wheelbase, signify a notable increase compared to the current HS.

The updated design features a strikingly aggressive stance, characterized by a prominent grille and elongated headlights extending towards the fenders.

The new HS showcases a departure from the soft contours of its predecessor, adopting sharper lines and a more angular aesthetic throughout. Under the hood, the Roewe RX5 houses a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine generating 138kW of power and 300Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The plug-in hybrid eRX5 combines a turbo 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor and a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering total system outputs of 183kW and 570Nm.

Notable features include expansive screen arrays, a power-operated tailgate, heated front seats, and a comprehensive suite of active safety and driver-assist technologies.

While MG initially planned to introduce a facelifted version of the current HS, set to include subtle styling updates and enhanced infotainment, this revision has been postponed. This strategic move underscores MG’s commitment to delivering a fresh, compelling offering to its customers.

The decision to badge the HS replacement as an MG marks a significant milestone, representing the first instance of a Roewe model being sold under the MG brand in Australia. Established in 2006, the Roewe brand serves as a spiritual successor to the Rover brand, reflecting SAIC Motor’s innovative approach in the automotive landscape.
