Mercedes revealed the Vision EQXX concept over two years ago, proudly emphasizing its remarkable range on multiple occasions since. The EQXX has achieved the impressive feat of traveling over 1,000 km on a single charge not once, but twice.
And now, it’s three times. Mercedes continues to highlight the range of a car that won’t see commercial release, tantalizing us with the promise of electric vehicles (EVs) capable of surpassing the 1,000 km mark in the future.
In its latest venture, the EQXX journeyed from Riyadh to Dubai, covering precisely 1,010 km on a single charge. Impressively, it showcased a groundbreaking energy efficiency of 7.4 kWh/100km (8.4 mi/kWh), as stated in the official press release. Mercedes proudly asserts that “even the Arabian Desert poses no challenge to energy efficiency.”
The journey encompassed bustling city streets and vast desert expanses, enduring ambient temperatures reaching up to 34°C. Yet, the EQXX surpassed its previous best by a significant margin. While we celebrate this achievement, the purpose behind these endeavors remains a lingering question.
Mercedes cites the objective of maximizing efficiency across all domains and assessing system performance in extreme desert conditions.
However, it’s crucial to remember that this is a concept car, not a forthcoming production model undergoing pre-release testing. Nonetheless, a “further developed version” of the EQXX’s “multi-source heat pump” has found its way into the Concept CLA Class, hinting at future possibilities.
Equipped with a solar roof, the EQXX managed to harness 1.8 kWh of solar energy during its 14-hour and 42-minute trek from Riyadh to Dubai, adding 24 km to its range.
