The Toyota GR Supra shares its platform and more with the BMW Z4 (G29), inviting inevitable comparisons between models from the Bavarian automaker.
However, what no one expected was the prevalence of quarter-mile dragstrip encounters between them. Traditionally, the agile Toyota GR Supra seldom competed directly against the Z4, given the latter’s rarity on local racetracks. Typically, GR Supras faced off against M3 and M4s.
Yet, surprisingly, the more appropriate comparison emerges with the BMW M2 or even the M240i (with or without xDrive). In the United States, a 2024 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 starts at $46,440, while the 2024 BMW 230i Coupe begins at a lower $38,800 MSRP.
The M240i, on the other hand, commences at $49,700 or $51,700 with xDrive, whereas the GR Supra, equipped with the equivalent 3.0-liter BMW twin-turbo engine starts at $55,400. On paper, the comparison seems straightforward.
However, encounters on the local quarter-mile dragstrip provide a different narrative. Amidst the TX2K’s 2024 edition, meticulously covered by the racing-focused ImportRace channel on YouTube, the showdown between a ‘sleeper’ BMW M240i and three modified Toyota GR Supra sports cars unfolds.
In the initial race, the white BMW surges ahead like a rocket, leaving a black GR Supra with a parachute behind, seemingly asleep in its lane. The BMW claims victory with a 9.02 pass, while the GR Supra’s time remains undisclosed.
Subsequently, the BMW outpaces another white GR Supra with a 7.91s ET against the latter’s 8.56s effort. However, inconsistency plagues the quick M240i in the final skirmish, resulting in a loss against yet another white GR Supra, with times of 8.4s versus 8.92s. Nevertheless, perhaps next time, the BMW will secure seven-second passes.
