Renowned California restomod specialist, Icon, recently marked a significant milestone with the completion of its 500th Toyota Land Cruiser build, the company announced. Following the same winning formula as its predecessors, the latest creation from Icon, the New School Edition 1964 Land Cruiser FJ44, maintains its classic exterior while incorporating modern updates for enhanced performance and comfort.

LED headlights, power side steps, and new wheels subtly refresh the exterior, preserving the iconic Land Cruiser aesthetic. Inside, the vehicle boasts heated seats, a state-of-the-art audio system, and a rearview camera for added convenience.

Rear jump seats, coupled with a bi-fold tailgate, ensure practicality, while a roof rack and ladder contribute to the Land Cruiser’s timeless expedition-ready appearance.

Under the hood, the mechanicals receive a comprehensive upgrade, with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and a four-wheel-drive system featuring locking differentials.

Upgraded brakes and suspension further enhance performance, while a ceramic-coated exhaust system adds a touch of refinement to the driving experience.

The journey for Icon founder Jonathan Ward began with a profound experience during an African safari in the 1990s, where the reliability of Toyota Land Cruisers left a lasting impression compared to other vehicles used for safari purposes. Inspired by this encounter, Ward founded TLC 4×4, initially focusing on restorations rather than restomods.

However, Ward’s vision evolved when he introduced a modified 1965 FJ43, featuring modern upgrades such as a custom leather interior and Audi-inspired gray paint. The enthusiastic response to this innovative approach laid the foundation for the establishment of Icon in 2003.

While Icon has expanded its repertoire to include restomods of various classics like the Chevrolet Thriftmaster pickup truck and the patinated Derelict series, its enduring legacy will always be rooted in the Toyota Land Cruiser restomods that pioneered its success.
