If you find yourself staring at the Suzuki Swift Hybrid and feeling like you’ve taken a trip back in time, you’re not alone. A hatchback with a manual transmission, focusing on fuel efficiency but still promising a hint of fun when you put your foot down?

It sounds like a recipe straight out of the 1980s hatchback era, a time when these little cars, often dismissed as “penalty boxes,” could surprise with their enjoyable driving dynamics.

But wait, there’s more: it’s a hybrid, and it’s brand new. However, if you’re in the United States, you’re out of luck. Suzuki no longer sells cars here.

But if it did, perhaps some of us would consider giving this unusually efficient Swift a chance, especially considering the legacy of the previous non-hybrid Swift, known for its affordable, cheerful, and lightweight design that promised driving enjoyment.

While the Swift Hybrid may not scream sportiness, its lightweight construction certainly contributes to its impressive fuel economy figures.

Weighing in at just 2,092 pounds, it achieves an impressive 64.2 mpg on the optimistic European test cycle, thanks to its 1.2-liter inline-three engine delivering 81 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque.

With a mild hybrid system featuring a 12-volt starter-generator unit and a 10 aH battery, the Swift Hybrid manages to balance efficiency with performance, adding just 15 pounds to the overall weight.

The fourth-generation Swift, revealed in Tokyo last year, boasts a modern design with a bold grille, angular headlights, and a sleek silhouette that stays true to its economical hatchback roots.

Despite its humble beginnings, the Swift has evolved into a stylish and practical choice, offering a peek of what’s to come in compact hybrids. While the Suzuki Swift may not be available in all markets, its blend of efficiency, affordability, and driving enjoyment makes it a compelling option for those lucky enough to have access to it.
