Cupra had previously confirmed the name and shared a teaser image earlier this year, coinciding with the announcement of production plans at a Hungarian plant. The Terramar shares a close kinship with the latest iteration of the global Volkswagen Tiguan, which premiered late last year.

It rides on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform tailored for compact, high-volume vehicles powered by gas engines, measuring approximately 177 inches in length. While gas-powered variants are in the pipeline for the Terramar, there will also be a plug-in hybrid iteration equipped with a battery likely matching the 19.7-kwh capacity found in the plug-in hybrid version of the global Tiguan.

The prototype showcased here represents the plug-in hybrid Terramar. The Terramar, in its current guise, is not expected to be available in the U.S. when Cupra eventually makes its American debut.

Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths, in March, confirmed plans for two vehicles tailored to the U.S. market. One will be an electric iteration of the Formentor, the current generation based on the outgoing global Tiguan. The second offering will be a larger SUV manufactured in North America.

Originally established as a performance sub-brand of VW Group’s Spanish marque SEAT, Cupra underwent repositioning in 2018 to become an independent brand offering a lineup of sporty, dynamic vehicles boasting striking designs. While still offering tuned versions of SEAT vehicles, Cupra is gradually introducing more standalone products, with the upcoming Terramar leading the charge.
