In 2022, Porsche’s CEO Oliver Blume confirmed plans for an SUV larger than the Cayenne, reminiscent of the SSP-based electric SUV proposed under Audi’s Artemis Project. Recently, spy pictures have surfaced of this “very un-Porsche-like” three-row SUV, poised to outsize the Cayenne and become Porsche’s flagship model.
The notion of ever-expanding luxury SUVs persists despite the rise of electric vehicles and their associated efficiency. Porsche’s endeavor to create a larger SUV than the Cayenne, dubbed the K1, exemplifies this trend. When Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002, it defied expectations, transforming it into a resounding success.
Initial plans for a three-row SUV above the Cayenne emerged in 2021, with a tentative release slated for the middle of the decade. Dealers privy to the plans revealed that the upcoming SUV, linked to Audi’s Artemis Project, bore a resemblance to the Audi Urban Sphere prototype. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the development of the all-electric SUV, codenamed K1, in July 2022.
Although initially described as “part sedan, part crossover,” the Porsche K1 prototype now resembles a conventional SUV in proportions and size, akin to the Range Rover EV prototype. Anticipated to debut no earlier than 2027 from Porsche’s Leipzig plant, where the Panamera and Macan are manufactured, the Porsche K1 represents a bold step forward for Porsche.
