Hyundai is preparing to make a significant splash at the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with its Ioniq 5 N. Four of these formidable electric vehicles will be entering the race, to set a new electric production SUV/crossover benchmark.
Among them, two Ioniq 5 N variants will undergo minimal modifications, aiming to showcase their prowess straight from the production line. These production-spec models will see only safety-related adjustments, such as the installation of Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans driver’s seats and Sabelt six-point racing harnesses.
The removal of rear seats to accommodate a roll cage and fire suppression system ensures compliance with race safety standards. Despite these modifications, Hyundai asserts that the Ioniq 5 N’s performance remains untouched, having already proven its mettle on renowned tracks like the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The other two Ioniq 5 N contenders will undergo more extensive modifications to push the boundaries of performance electric vehicles. Hyundai’s decision to showcase the Ioniq 5 N’s capabilities at Pikes Peak follows the success of the Kia EV6 GT, emphasizing Korean automakers’ prowess in the performance EV segment.
This race-ready variant of Hyundai’s popular EV boasts a 601-horsepower powertrain, capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in a mere 3.25 seconds (or 641 horsepower with the N Grin Boost mode engaged).
Hyundai’s confidence in the Ioniq 5 N’s abilities is evident, as they aim to compete without additional performance modifications. The Korean carmaker’s efforts have already earned accolades, with the Ioniq 5 N clinching the 2024 World Performance Car trophy at the World Car Awards.
