Streets of Long Beach receive changes ahead of the IMSA, IndyCar doubleheader

The 49th edition of the Grand Prix of Long Beach promises excitement as drivers from both IndyCar and IMSA gear up to tackle the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit. This year, the track has undergone slight improvements, including enhancements to the curbing in Turn 5. Significant work has been done to reinforce the curbs with longer bolts to withstand the rigors of sports cars racing over them.

Another notable change is the adjustment to the painted portion of the curb in Turn 8, which has been relocated closer to the apex of the turn, improving the flow of the circuit. Additionally, asphalt grinding has been carried out in Turn 8 to ensure a smoother surface, enhancing the racing experience for drivers and spectators alike.

In line with safety measures adopted at the Streets of St. Petersburg, all tire barriers have been covered with conveyor belt material, replacing the previous signage. This decision aims to reduce the likelihood of cars becoming lodged in the barriers, thereby facilitating the work of the AMR IndyCar Safety Team and minimizing damage to race teams’ vehicles.

IndyCar confirmed the track changes during IMSA’s opening practice session on Friday morning, setting the stage for an action-packed weekend. Later in the day, IndyCar will hold its first practice session, streamed live on Peacock, while IMSA will conduct its second practice session and qualifying, also available for streaming.

IMSA’s GTP and GTD classes will compete in a 100-minute race on Saturday afternoon, followed by IndyCar’s second points-paying round, an 85-lap battle scheduled for Sunday afternoon. With these events, the Grand Prix of Long Beach promises thrilling competition and showcases the skill and precision of drivers from both series on the iconic street circuit.
