The BYD Shark is poised to challenge the dominance of the Ford F-150. Recently, the pickup truck made an appearance in Mexico City ahead of its official debut, scheduled for later this week at the Beijing Auto Show. BYD intends to make a global impact with its inaugural pickup truck.
Teasers have confirmed the name “Shark” for BYD’s first-ever pickup truck, featuring prominent lettering in Latin characters, signaling the company’s aim for international markets.
In a bold move, the Shark was spotted in Mexico City without any camouflage, just weeks after being seen in disguise during its development phase.
The Shark’s design draws parallels with the Ford F-150 Lightning, particularly evident in its massive headlights connected by a full-width LED strip, mirrored at the rear with vertically positioned taillights.
Sporting a rugged appearance, the Shark boasts a large “BYD” lettering dominating the front grille, accompanied by an aluminum skid plate and plastic cladding.
Measuring 214.8 inches in length and 77.6 inches in width, with a wheelbase of 128.3 inches, the Shark falls between the dimensions of the Ford Ranger and the Ford F-150, potentially bridging segments in the US market.
Under the hood, a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor delivers a total of 480 horsepower in an all-wheel-drive configuration.
Inside, expect a high-tech ambiance with a floating digital instrument cluster and a rotatable central touchscreen. The Shark will feature a lithium-iron-phosphate BYD Blade battery pack, providing an electric range of up to 62 miles and a total range of around 620 miles.
The mid-size pickup truck is set to be revealed in China this week, where more details will be revealed. BYD’s global ambitions with the Shark could shake up the pickup truck market, posing a significant challenge to the Ford F-150’s dominance.
