Remember how Rivian got access to Tesla’s giant network of charging stations last month? Well, there’s a catch: Rivian vehicles don’t have the right plug to use them. But fear not, Rivian promised to send out free adapters, and they’re finally starting to deliver.
Most electric vehicles use a plug called CCS, but Tesla uses their own NACS plug (they opened up their charging standard in 2022). While you could buy a third-party adapter, Rivian is giving them out for free to their owners.
Rivian is the second automaker (after Ford) to send out free NACS adapters to their owners. GM, Polestar, and Volvo are next in line to get access to Tesla’s Superchargers this spring, with others to follow later. If you’re a Rivian owner, keep an eye on your email for a request for your shipping address. They might be prioritizing owners with lower VIN numbers (vehicle identification numbers).
Make sure you responded to the email from Rivian on April 4th if you want to get your free adapter. This means more charging options for Rivian drivers. No more range anxiety with Tesla’s Supercharger network at your fingertips.
