General Motors has been focusing on making electric cars, but now they’re also looking into making more hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. At the Beijing Auto Show, they showed a new car called the Chevrolet Equinox Plus. It’s a plug-in hybrid SUV made for China, but it might come to the United States too.
This car is a result of a partnership between General Motors and SAIC-GM. It has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that can produce 177 horsepower. It also has an electric motor that adds 188 horsepower. Together, they make a total of about 365 horsepower. The car can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in under seven seconds.
The top-of-the-line Activ version can drive up to 96 miles on electricity alone. It has a big battery pack, and cheaper versions have smaller batteries. On a different test in the United States, the car might not go as far on electricity alone.
Plug-in hybrid cars are not as popular as fully electric cars in the United States. But in 2023, they sold better than ever before. In 2024, more people might buy them because some car companies are delaying making expensive electric cars. Plug-in hybrids can be a good option for people who worry about finding places to charge their electric cars.
The Chevrolet Equinox Plus is now available in China, but General Motors hasn’t said if it will come to the United States. However, the car looks similar to the new gas-powered Equinox that will be sold in the United States. So it might not be hard or expensive for General Motors to add the plug-in hybrid engine to the American version. Because General Motors wants to make more hybrid cars, and people are buying more of them, it’s likely that they will sell the Equinox Plus in the United States.
