Just over 5,760 units of the 2014 to 2015 model year BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, and 4 Series have been recalled in the US market due to faulty head airbag inflators. BMW of North America stated that these cars were equipped with head airbag inflators that may rupture.
The problematic head airbag inflators, with part numbers 7239399, 7239400, 7311201, 7311202, 7390327, and 7390328, were manufactured by Autoliv Steering Wheels Mexico. These inflators are susceptible to corrosion, leading to potential failure at the weld joint. The primary safety risk associated with these inflators is the risk of separation at the joint, which could cause injury or fatality to occupants and nearby individuals in the event of a crash.
While BMW’s North American division has not received any reports, complaints, or warranty claims related to this issue, they are proactively recalling 5,761 vehicles to replace the head airbag inflators as a precautionary measure. The affected vehicles include the 2014 to 2015 BMW 2 Series Coupe, 3 Series Sedan, and 4 Series Coupe, with varying production dates and model variants.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their preferred dealer promptly for a free replacement of the head airbag inflators. BMW dealers nationwide have been instructed to carry out the replacements at no cost to the customers. Owner notification letters will be sent out around June 14, 2024, to inform affected individuals about the recall.
It’s recommended to check whether your vehicle is included in the recall by verifying the 17-character VIN on BMW’s website or the NHTSA’s website, as production dates can vary. If your vehicle is part of the recall, take action promptly to ensure your safety and that of others on the road.
