Smart Showcases Rugged Concept #5 Electric Mid-Size SUV

Smart, long associated with compact city cars, has revealed Concept #5, a departure from their traditional offerings—a mid-size, all-electric SUV challenging preconceived notions about the brand. Contrary to its petite predecessors, this concept boasts a substantial battery capacity exceeding 100 kWh, providing an impressive range of over 341 miles on the WLTP cycle. Additionally, its 800-volt architecture enables rapid charging, going from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes.

While specifics about the powertrain configuration remain undisclosed, the Concept #5 hints at a dual-motor all-wheel drive system, aligning with its off-road capabilities. Notably, it features a raised ride height, robust off-road tires, prominent skid plates, and even a discreet winch integrated into the front bumper, signaling its rugged ambitions, albeit some features may not make it to production.

Design-wise, Smart’s DNA is recognizable, albeit stretched over a taller, square body reminiscent of Mercedes EQB SUV styling. This departure signals a bold new direction for Smart, particularly under its new ownership partnership with Geely, following its transition from Mercedes. The shift in ownership is reflected in the brand’s evolving identity and product strategy.

Inside, Concept #5 is dominated by screens, with a three-display dashboard setup and advanced infotainment systems powered by an AMD V2000 chip. Smart promises a sophisticated onboard AI assistant for natural language interaction. Notably, the concept introduces “zero-gravity” front seats with massage, ventilation, and a footrest, along with innovative features like a removable center console speaker and ambient lighting integrated into the headrests.

These interior enhancements underscore Smart’s commitment to blending luxury and technology within a spacious SUV framework. While some features might seem futuristic and speculative, they indicate the brand’s aspirations toward premium comfort and cutting-edge connectivity. Concept #5 signifies a significant departure for Smart, signaling its intent to compete in the burgeoning electric SUV market while embracing a new era of design and innovation.
