Mopar Insiders, a source for car news, shared some interesting information about Jeep’s plans for next year. Right now, the entry-level engine for the two-row Grand Cherokee and three-row Grand Cherokee L is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. But things might change in 2025.

According to Mopar Insiders, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, is thinking about replacing the current engines with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This new engine would be standard for both the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L.

It’s surprising because it would mean saying goodbye to the current V6 and V8 engines. The Grand Cherokee L might only offer the 2.0-liter engine, while the Grand Cherokee could still be available as a plug-in hybrid.

Switching from a V8 to a four-cylinder engine isn’t unusual. Ford’s Explorer starts with a four-cylinder engine, and Jeep already has a turbo 2.0-liter engine in the Wrangler. But offering only the smaller engine would be unexpected. Many people waiting to buy a new Grand Cherokee hope to see a new inline-six engine called the Hurricane.

Last year, Jeep sold almost 245,000 Grand Cherokees in the U.S., making it one of the brand’s best-selling models. People think the inline-six engine would be perfect for the Grand Cherokee lineup.

Jeep plans to update both the two-row and three-row Grand Cherokees slightly for next year. A bigger redesign is expected around 2027. This redesign might include moving the Grand Cherokee to a new platform called the STLA Large platform.

Right now, it’s on the WL platform. We’ll have to wait for Jeep’s official announcement about the 2025 Grand Cherokee to see if they mention anything about the Hurricane engine. We’ve reached out to Jeep for comment and will update you if they respond.
