Recently, we had the opportunity to test drive a 1968 Ford Mustang that underwent extensive modifications by Velocity Restorations of Florida, resulting in a high-quality restomod. Priced at over $300,000, this Mustang represents one of the finest restomods produced by an American shop.
However, not everyone prefers modern upgrades like a Coyote motor and a ten-speed transmission. In contrast to the Velocity restomod, another 1968 Mustang has taken a different path.
Dubbed the “Mustero,” this Mustang underwent a unique transformation, replacing its rear end with a pickup bed. Surprisingly, this modification is not a DIY project but traces its origins back to a Beverly Hills-based Ford dealership in the 1960s.
Rather than purchasing separate vehicles for weekend trips and work purposes, the dealership combined the Mustang coupe with a truck bed, resulting in a professionally crafted hybrid.
With meticulous attention to detail, including professionally installed rear glass and a coated truck bed, the Mustero exudes authenticity reminiscent of a factory prototype.
While equipped with a modest 200-cubic inch straight six engine, the Mustero’s unique design commands attention wherever it goes. Priced at $18,000, it offers a distinctive alternative to pricier restomods like those from Velocity, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a blend of vintage charm and practicality.
