If you go to Citroen’s website and start configuring one of their Relay commercial vans, you’ll see a lot of choices. They have a regular panel van, a window van, different kinds of cabs, and even a floor cab. But the most interesting option is something called the Back-to-Back, which looks like someone at Citroen had a bit too much to drink and decided to sell a push-me-pull-you van for fun.

But according to the media outlets, there’s a reason behind this unusual choice. Citroen isn’t trying to sell a van just for laughs. The real reason is that many companies that customize vans into campers or motorhomes only need the cab. Selling just the cab separately would be inconvenient for shipping and assembly.

So, by putting two cabs together, it makes things easier and cheaper for everyone involved. Plus, since the Relay is front-wheel drive, it’s easier to sell them in pairs. And if someone decides to drive the Relay Back-to-Back without separating the cabs, well, that’s just an extra bit of fun.

It’s actually a smart move for these companies. You could buy a regular Relay chassis cab for a certain price, but if you only need the cab, you’re left with extra parts to deal with. On the other hand, you could buy a Back-to-Back for less money and get two cabs for the price of one. If you’re in the business of customizing campers, these savings could make a big difference to your bottom line.
