Mazda just announced that the CX-5 will stick around, and the next version will have a hybrid engine. They shared this news during a meeting about their finances. They said, “Mazda has a plan to equip the next CX-5 with a Mazda-developed hybrid engine.” This new CX-5 should come out in 2025.

It’s a big deal that Mazda is making its own hybrid engine. Before, they had to borrow technology from Toyota for their hybrid cars. For example, the Mazda 2 in Europe is actually a Toyota Yaris, not a real Mazda.

Now, with their own hybrid engine, Mazda can compete better with other popular SUVs like the Honda CR-V Hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. These SUVs sell a lot in the USA, while the Mazda CX-5 is not as popular, even though it’s a good car. Having a hybrid option might make more people interested in buying a Mazda.

Mazda also has plans for the CX-50, another SUV. They’re thinking about making a hybrid version of that too. The CX-50 is sold in North America and China. Last year, China got a version of it with a hybrid engine made by Toyota.

Mazda has been a bit slow to make electric cars, but they’re getting there. They tried selling the MX-30 in the USA, but it didn’t do well because it didn’t have a good range and was expensive. But they’re working on new electric cars, like the EZ-6 sedan for China and the Arata crossover concept. So, soon we might see more hybrid and electric Mazdas on the road.
