Masahiro Moro, the CEO of Mazda has finally given the company’s best-selling model, the CX-5, a makeover. A significant advancement, the hybrid system in the next CX-5 will be built around Mazda’s SkyActiv gasoline engine.
In addition, Moro disclosed intentions to launch a hybrid version of the CX-50 designed exclusively for the North American market in the second half of 2024, perhaps as a model year 2025 offering. The CX-50 for North America won’t have Skyactiv power like its European version since Changan Mazda debuted the CX-50 Hybrid at the Shanghai Motor Show, which has a different drivetrain.
Derived from the RAV4 Hybrid, the CX-50 Hybrid incorporates a 2.5-liter engine, high-voltage battery, and electric motors, delivering a combined output of 163 kW for the all-wheel-drive version, equivalent to 219 horsepower. While specific details regarding the hybrid system for the CX-5 remain undisclosed, Mazda emphasizes enhancements in combustion efficiency and emissions reduction.
With SkyActiv-G engines available in various displacements, ranging from 1.3 to 2.5 liters, and ongoing development of the innovative SkyActiv-X technology, Mazda remains committed to delivering efficient and dynamic powertrains across its lineup.
