Chinese automaker BYD has launched an electric car called the Seagull in China, and it’s causing concern among American car companies and politicians.

The Seagull is priced at around $12,000 in China, but it’s well-made and performs like U.S. electric vehicles that cost three times as much. There’s also a cheaper version that costs under $10,000.

However, tariffs on imported Chinese vehicles mean the Seagull won’t be available in the U.S. anytime soon, and if it were, it might cost more than $12,000.

The rise of affordable electric cars from China could have a big impact on the global auto industry, similar to when Japanese cars became popular during the 1970s oil crises.

Experts say that American car companies need to pay attention to Chinese competitors like BYD because they could disrupt the market.

Politicians and manufacturers in the U.S. are worried about the threat posed by Chinese electric vehicles. The Biden administration has announced tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles to protect American jobs and national security.

Chinese electric cars are known for their quality and affordability, unlike many electric cars outside of China, which are often expensive and aimed at wealthier buyers.

The Seagull has impressed experts with its build quality and efficiency. It can travel 252 miles on a single charge and is designed to be cost-effective.

BYD keeps costs down by making many of the car’s parts itself and designing the car with efficiency in mind.

Despite not being available in the U.S., the Seagull has caught the attention of American car companies. Ford CEO Jim Farley has acknowledged the threat posed by Chinese electric cars and is working on a new, affordable electric vehicle to compete with them.

The emergence of affordable electric cars from China could change the global auto industry, and American car companies need to adapt to stay competitive.
