Introducing the latest addition to BYD’s electrifying Ocean series: the Sea Lion 07. This new model joins a distinguished lineup that spans sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs, underscoring BYD’s commitment to electrification across diverse vehicle segments.
Positioned as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, the Sea Lion 07 sets a new standard for affordability and performance, priced at just over $26,000. As BYD charts a course to challenge Tesla’s dominance, the Sea Lion 07 emerges as a compelling option for eco-conscious consumers seeking cutting-edge technology and sustainable transportation solutions.
The Sea Lion 07 shares many design elements with the Ocean-X concept revealed in 2021 as the flagship model on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0. While the Ocean-X concept was showcased last year during the Guangzhou Auto Show, the Sea Lion 07 is now set to enter production, with deliveries scheduled to commence later this month. However, unlike the Ocean-X concept, the Sea Lion 07 is built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture.
BYD claims that the upgraded architecture enables higher integration, a more robust powertrain, and enhanced charging capabilities. The new electric motors boast a top rotation speed of 23,000 rpm, the highest among production vehicles.
Additionally, the platform features BYD’s next-generation blade batteries, known for their fast-charging capabilities even in extremely cold conditions (-25°C/-13°F). With China’s top chargers (peak power 180 kW), the Sea Lion 07 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes. Notably, these are lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells.
Buyers can opt for a more powerful motor (308 horsepower) and an 80-kWh battery, extending the range to 610 km (379 miles). The top model boasts a dual-motor AWD configuration with a peak power of 523 horsepower, accelerating from 0 to 100 kph in 4.2 seconds.
Utilizing the same 80-kWh battery, the Sea Lion 07 AWD offers a CLTC range of 550 km (342 miles). Notably, this is BYD’s first model to incorporate the DiPilot 100 driver assistance system, equipped with 12 ultrasonic radars, five millimeter-wave radars, and 11 cameras for advanced driver assistance features.
