Responding to a peculiar request, S-Klub LA took on the challenge, familiar with handling unique demands as specialists in restomoding cars. The outcome? A Mercedes-Benz 300 SL transformed into what they named the Gullwing Speedster.
Starting as a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, the team at S-Klub LA removed the iconic gullwing doors as per the customer’s request. The result? A striking silhouette with a high and wide sill, making ingress and egress a bit of a challenge.
Despite its name, the Gullwing Speedster doesn’t feature gullwing doors anymore. Instead, it sports a windshield sourced from a Porsche 356 Speedster from the 1950s. Riding on HRE wheels and equipped with sizable Brembo brakes, the Gullwing Speedster packs a punch. Underneath, it houses an engine from an SLK 32 AMG—a 3.2-liter V6 with a helical twin-screw supercharger and water-to-air intercooler.
Originally delivering 349 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, the engine underwent modifications, though specific details aren’t provided. The restomod incorporates various factory parts, including headlights, fog lights, grille, logos, and mirrors sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Even the onboard mirror, now placed on the dashboard, remains original.
Currently, the S-Klub experts are working on a Mercedes-Benz SL “Pagoda” build for the SEMA Show despite encountering overheating issues during initial testing. Originally intended as a gift from a Tennessee man to his wife, the vehicle was sold due to a change of heart. However, its future with the S-Klub team is uncertain, though they’re determined to ready it in time for SEMA.
