In April, General Motors identified an issue with drive unit stator assemblies due to a failure in the insulation process. This oversight could lead to wire-to-wire contact within the stator, resulting in a sudden loss of motive power and potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
The affected vehicles, totaling 10 battery-electric models destined for the US market, were produced between February 28 and April 12, 2024. General Motors, in collaboration with the supplier LG-Magna, initiated containment efforts to address the problem and ensure proper manufacturing of stator assemblies.
Owners of the affected vehicles, including one GMC Sierra EV, one Hummer EV SUV, two Chevrolet Silverado EVs, and three Blazer EVs, will be notified via mail by June 24, 2024, with instructions for free drive unit replacements.
To aid owners in identifying affected vehicles, GM offers VIN lookup services through its recall portal, free of charge. Notably, the Chevrolet Blazer EV stands out as the most affordable option among the zero-emission vehicles, offering competitive range and warranty coverage. With plans for further model expansion, including the introduction of the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, GM remains committed to advancing its electric vehicle lineup.
