Don’t expect to see a Lamborghini electric supercar anytime soon. The company’s CEO thinks electric supercars just aren’t selling well, so they’re focusing on other things for now.
Lamborghini’s first electric car, coming in 2028, will be a four-seater grand tourer, not a supercar. They’re sticking with gas-powered engines for their supercars, like the Aventador’s replacement and the Huracan successor (although the Huracan is getting a new twin-turbo V8).
It turns out Lamborghini isn’t the only one thinking this way. Other supercar companies like Bugatti and Pagani are also waiting on electric supercars. Bugatti’s new car will be a hybrid with a massive V16 engine, and Pagani is still working on electric car technology but hasn’t released a production model yet because batteries are too heavy.
There is one exception: Ferrari. Ferrari is actually ahead of schedule on development for their first electric car, which is coming out in late 2025. They’re even building a new factory to make electric vehicles.
So why are most supercar companies sticking with gas engines? They say it’s because that’s what their customers want. They like the feeling of a powerful gas engine, and electric cars, while fast, just don’t deliver the same thrill.
Lamborghini’s CEO ideally wants to keep using combustion engines, but in a more eco-friendly way. They’re looking into using special synthetic fuels that are almost carbon neutral, similar to what Porsche is doing.
