Rivian is using Google’s Android Automotive software in its vehicles, as reported by 9to5Google. This software is very customizable, allowing carmakers to adjust it to their needs while keeping all its great features.
The R1T and R1S already use this software, and it will also be used in Rivian’s upcoming models, the R2 and R3, which are smaller and more affordable. Google said Rivian uses Android Automotive as the “base OS” for its in-vehicle software. The media has reached out to Rivian for more details.
It’s important to note that Android Automotive is not the same as Android Auto. Rivian cars don’t have Android Auto (or Apple CarPlay) compatibility. Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, doesn’t want to rely on Google or Apple, so the company prefers to create its own unique infotainment system. Rivian clarified that while they use Android Automotive as a software base, it doesn’t mean their cars will have Android Auto compatibility. They will keep working on their own solution with integrated software and apps.
Just recently, Rivian announced that they will add YouTube and Google Cast to the R1T and R1S. This allows owners to stream videos from their phones and watch them on the 15.6-inch central display. Rivian is focused on improving the user experience without adding Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Not having Android Auto or Apple CarPlay is a drawback for many potential buyers. Some people have decided not to buy an R1T or R1S because of this. It remains to be seen if Rivian will eventually add these features, but it seems unlikely. Other brands like GM have also moved away from these screen-mirroring apps in favor of their own solutions.
Besides, Rivian has exciting plans for its R1 platform. They will introduce a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is lighter than the previous one, plus a new heat pump. This means a more efficient battery and better noise, vibration, and harshness levels.
