Debuting in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has firmly established itself as a popular choice among compact crossover SUVs. Despite a notable 8.7% growth in deliveries for Mazda North American Operations during the first four months of the year, the CX-5’s sales have experienced a 14% decline compared to the previous year.
This drop can be attributed to its aging design and stiff competition from Mazda’s newer models, including the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90. The current generation of the CX-5, which premiered at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show and received a refresh for the 2022 model year, now faces significant challenges in a competitive market.
Rumors suggest Mazda plans to introduce a third-generation CX-5 with a Skyactiv hybrid powertrain. While details are scarce, it’s expected to offer either a regular hybrid or a plug-in hybrid option. Digital artists have begun imagining the new CX-5’s design, with some envisioning a conservative evolution in line with previous generations.
Additionally, speculation exists about Mazda introducing its first dedicated EV for America by 2027, possibly an all-electric version of the CX-5, providing gasoline, hybrid, and all-electric options to cover various market segments.
