Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, has introduced a new version of the Jeep Avenger called the 4xe. This new model adds to the options available to customers, joining the existing all-electric and standard hybrid models. Unlike the regular model, which is a front-wheel drive crossover, the 4xe version has some off-road capability, making it a rival to vehicles like the Suzuki Jimny.

Underneath the hood, there’s a turbocharged 1.2-liter engine that produces 134 horsepower, connected to the wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Avenger 4xe also has two electric motors, one for each axle, adding up to 28 horsepower each. According to the automaker, these electric motors boost performance and help with off-road driving.

It takes about 9.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph, with a top speed of 120 mph. Compared to the front-wheel drive variant, the 4xe produces 35 more horsepower and a total of 170 lb-ft of torque. However, Jeep mentions that the 4xe version emits slightly more CO2 emissions than the standard hybrid Avenger.

The all-wheel-drive system of the Avenger 4xe is quite smart, deactivating the front axle when it’s not needed. At low speeds, power goes to all four wheels with a 50:50 split between the front and rear axles. Between speeds of 19 and 56 mph, it switches to front-wheel drive, engaging the rear axle only when necessary.

The vehicle adjusts torque distribution based on road conditions when the 4xe system is active, with a maximum split of 50:50. Above 56 mph, only the front axle receives power to improve fuel efficiency.

The Avenger 4xe comes with a Selec-Terrain function offering various driving modes, including Auto, Snow, Sand&Mud, and Sport, catering to different driving needs. It also boasts improved off-road capabilities with a higher ground clearance, better approach, breakover, and departure angles, and the ability to ford up to 15.7 inches of water.

Jeep has made some styling updates to the 4xe, including a redesigned front and rear bumper, standard roof bars, black-painted wheels, and luminous green accents. Orders for the Avenger 4xe are expected to open by the fourth quarter of 2024. However, it’s unlikely to be available in the United States.
